Let’s Ride: North to the Yukon and Southern Alaska, Day -1

It’s late, and there’s still lots to get done before I can roll, but tomorrow I head out on a trip I’ve wanted to take for a long time.

My friend Howard and I are riding our motorcycles from Texas (for Howard) and Nebraska (me) up to the Canadian Rockies; up the Alaska Highway up to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory; then down the Cassier Highway to Stewart, British Columbia and Hyder, Alaska; then across Canada down to extreme northwest North Dakota to see where my grandfather homesteaded back in the early 1900s; and then finally back home.

Over the next two weeks I’ll be posting photos, maps, and accounts of our trip. Hope you’ll all come along for the ride.

Good night!

  1. Eric V says:

Buy a bear bell at Bell II, use your mosquito nets, 100% Deet and eat at ‘The Bus” in Hyder. Hyder’s not the same since they paved the road and destroyed the old docks and built the new boat ramp and docks out of concrete, but it’s still a unique place. Do go up the Salmon Glacier road to see the glacier. It’s paved to the mine, gravel after that, but doable on street bikes most years.

In the Yukon, road problems are marked with a orange cone or stake. Pay Attention! And they like to tear up the road and gravel it, then water that down. Can be challenging on two wheels.

You will be going to the signpost forrest in Watson Lake, right? Don’t miss it and spend some time looking around. Take a sign to put up too if you have a mind to.

The nicest hotel in Watson Lake is “A Nice Motel”. Yes, it’s at the service station. Go there to get your room and ice. Do NOT stay at the Air Force Lodge if you can avoid it. Flea ridden nastiness.

Have a fun 4 day ride. 😉 Don’t let Howard whine about the bugs.
