What to do on a snow day in media literacy class

To all the faculty out there who are teaching an intro to mass comm / media literacy class, here’s an idea for a quicky online snow day assignment built off the great Pew Project Excellence in Journalism State of the News Media report.

There are reports here about every major news medium, so this assignment can be changed to meet the needs of your class wherever you are in the media units of your class.

At any rate, we’re working on the Audio chapter this week.  Here’s what I’ve asked my students to do today:

Here is your Snow Day assignment worth 5 participation points:

Read the Pew State of the Media report: Audio 2012: How far will digital go?

Write a summary, using five bullet points, of the top five things you learned reading the report.

Each bullet point should have two sentences.  The first sentence explains what you learned.  The second sentence explains why it was important.

Just because school is closed doesn’t mean you have to be getting behind in class.  Your students will love you for it!  (Not really on that last point….)
