Media Criticism From My Commentary Students

This week I asked my commentary and blogging students to write a blog post on media criticism.  Here’s what each of them came up with:

  • Media Criticism: Sexism in broadcasting – Rachel A.
I can’t tell you how many times after hearing that my major is multimedia and journalism, someone has replied with “Oh, you’d like nice as a news anchor/weather person.”
  • Buzzfeed – Katie C.
This column about Buzzfeed from the New York Times talks about the release of the Russia dossier. They writer of the column Ben Smith does a good job explaining the blow by blow of what the release of these documents meant for America and journalism in general. While there is a lot to be said for releasing such an important batch of documents to the public, there have been several reports that those connected to these documents have been assassinated for their involvement in the release.
  • “Sex Sells”: The lazy way to advertise – Ashlee G.
This topic hits close to home for me because it’s in the field of what I may be doing for the rest of my life. Basically, the advertising world is chock full of sexism.
  • Media Criticism: Facebook “News” – Shelby L.
I have a few Facebook friends that post some frustrating or offensive stuff. I see a lot of pro-life posts (that bash women more than they protect unborn children), and I see a lot of homophobic or transphobic posts. Typically, that would lead to an unfriend, but when they’re family, I can’t do it that way.
  • Media Criticism: Creepypasta – Jess M.
I’ve always loved horror stories…well that’s a lie. I’ve always loved reading horror stories. I watched the original IT when I was young and it scarred me for years. Now I love just about anything scary as long as there isn’t a whole lot of gore. So, years ago as I sifted through all the random, and sometimes seriously disturbing, content on the internet I stumbled upon Creepypastas.
  • We’re Being A Bit Too Harsh – Haley P.
Sinclair broadcast group, the largest group of local TV news stations in the country, recently came under fire for making each of their anchors read the same line as part of their nightly news broadcast.
  • Israel Adesanya is his own fighter and person – J.D.
Before Israel Adesanya’s second UFC fight Saturday night, a lot of people in the media were comparing Adesanya to UFC great Jon Jones. While I do understand the comparison because of how creative both fighters are with their striking on their feet, I think a lot of the media made this connection mostly because the two are both (or were at one point) young, lanky black men.
  • Dive Into the Internet With Me – Rachel S.
The plan is simple: Have the Internet take me wherever it wants me to go, with me clicking randomly when several options pop up. I have a starting point in mind then may God have mercy on my soul. I will record my journey in this post so you can follow along at home. Here. We. Go.
  • Media Criticism: The First Take – Angel Y.
Just this week, on First take. One of the biggest arguments was made on about rookie of the year award. There are many awards that are given out for basketball but just this year there was a particular incident that made it all very questionable.
  • Media Criticism: This Hannity Situation – Stuart W.
It appears that Sean Hannity, Fox News contributor and one of the highest paid news personalities in the world, has been outed as incredibly compromised in his ability to deliver any sort of objective news or insightful commentary to his audience, at least when it comes to our current president.
